After her graduation from Zhungshan Medical College (the current SYSU), Chi-Chao Chan earned both a B.A. and M.D. from Johns Hopkins University and completed her ophthalmology residency at Stanford University School of Medicine. She also finished two post-doctoral fellowships: ophthalmic pathology at Wilmer Institute, Johns Hopkins Medical School and clinical ocular immunology at National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health. Currently, Dr. Chan is the Chief of the Immunopathology Section in the Laboratory of Immunology and the Head of Histopathology Core at the National Eye Institute. She has published 600 papers in peer-reviewed journals on a broad spectrum of topics, from ocular complications of AIDS to vitreoretinal lymphoma and age-related macular degeneration, 51 book chapters, and one textbook on primary intraocular lymphoma. Dr. Chan is a Senior Achievement Awardee from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an ARVO Gold Fellow. She serves as an editorial board member for 16 medical journals and is on the trustee board of Lingnan Foundation, an American philanthropy founded in 1893, which seeks to contribute to the advancement of higher education in South China. She also represents the third generation of a family attributed with modernizing ophthalmology in China and continued her family’s legacy, as a mentor, a champion for the advancement of eye care in China, and as a liaison between vision researchers in China, USA, and the world.
